What Is Autism?

Autism is a developmental disability characterized by abnormalities in socialization, communication and behavior.
    Impairment in Social Interaction:
     
  • impaired use of nonverbal gestures 
  • impaired relationships 
    Impairments in Communication: 
     
  • abnormal speech patterns 
  • repetitive language 
  • lack of understanding of abstract concepts 
    Repetitive Behavior and/or Restricted Interests and Activities:
     
  • resistance in change in routine 
  • repetitive movement 
  • abnormal preoccupation with objects and areas of interest
