OUR COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED

In 1997, Mecklenburg Autistic Group Homes, Inc. (MAGH) started its Community Services (CS) program to provide CAP/MR and State funded services for children and adults living at home. MAGH soon became Autism Services of Mecklenburg County, Inc. (ASMC). Although the CS program never grew much beyond 25 or 30 consumers, there was rarely any turnover among families or staff.

Unfortunately, the program was only marginally profitable, due in part to the low number of consumers. As the cost of providing services went up and Medicaid reimbursement rates went down, losses began to mount. At first we used reserve funds from other programs to offset the losses. As things got worse, we had to cut pay and reduce benefits; not only in Community Services staff, but agency wide. To their great credit, our staff remained loyal to the families they worked with and to ASMC.

However, by November 2010, we had no choice but close the CS program. Families and staff were told that Home & Community Supports, Personal Care and Respite services would end effective January 31, 2011. To the best of our knowledge, the families and staff who are no longer a part of ASMC were able to find services and employment with other providers, and we sincerely wish them the best.
