Employment & Training

All applicants for Direct Support Positions must have:

- A High School Diploma or GED, and
- A driver’s license valid for use in NC, at least three years driving experience, and a good driving record. Proof of Auto Liability Insurance is also required.

Prospective employees must provide information necessary to verify their education, employment history, and driving record. Offers of employment are conditional upon the verification of background information, including a criminal background, and passing drug screening. Employees must have a Tb test and complete a medical statement upon employment and annually thereafter.

Group Homes
Direct Support Staff assist and encourage residents to become more independent in their daily lives, to participate in more fully in their community, and to protect their right to be treated with fairness and dignity. Direct Support Staff positions may be full-time, part-time, or PRN. Positions may involve weekdays only, a combination of weekdays and weekends, weekends only, or even alternate weekends. They may be on 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift. Starting pay varies depending on education and experience. Experience and education in human services is preferred.

Community Services (CS)
Community Services Instructors (CSI) usually work one-on-one with a child or adult in the consumer’s home and/or community. Like the Direct Support Staff, the CSI assists and encourages the individual to become more independent in their daily lives, to participate in their community to the fullest extent possible, and to protect their right to be treated with fairness and dignity. These positions require prior experience working directly with people with disabilities.

CSI positions include both full-time and part-time schedules, usually during late afternoon/evening hours and/or weekends. Starting pay varies depending on the service provided. Some CSI positions require the applicant to have at least a Bachelorette degree and related post-graduate experience. Staff may be responsible for transporting participants to various locations within the community.

Day Activity Program (DAP)
DAP staff assist and support program participant in developing skills necessary to become more self-reliant and self-supporting and to become more involved in their community. Program activities are provided in a variety of settings throughout the community.

After School Program
The After School Program operates on weekday afternoons and Teacher Workdays throughout the school year. Staff work directly with children in small groups and one-to-one. The goal of the program is to provide a safe and well-supervised setting, where children with disabilities can interact and have fun in a structured learning environment. Staff may be responsible for transporting students home at the end of the day and on field trips on teacher workdays.
